Online Review:The memorable song by Beyond

I am going to analyze a song that has always been in the hearts of the people in Hong Kong. The song was first released in 1993 and was later cover by many singers throughout the world. This famous song have even been use in the Tiananmen Square protests event every year to symbolize “the never given up capture of dream.” Whenever the intro of the song is played no one in Hong Kong will not know what song is being played.

“海闊天空” was create and sang by a famous local Hong Kong band called Beyond. The band was chase globally mainly in Asia people was all out of their mind with the band. Sadly their lead vocal died in an accident at a young age which made the band fall out because the band was never the same without him.

As Olick (2011) stated “collective memory functions as a regulator of individual memory at any one moment. It even takes place of individual memory whenever it passes beyond the memory of a given group and the actual experience of those for whom it is a reference.” The lyrics in the song really touches a lot of Hong Kongers’ heart since it really reflects the dark side of our lives. “多少次迎著冷眼與嘲笑 從沒有放棄過心中的理想-Many times I’ve faced the cold with eyes of ridicule, never have I gave up my heart’s hopes and ideals.” Despite how other people see us but we have never given up our dream can really reflect Hong Kong culture. As the old saying goes “the people of Hong Kong never gives up on anything we are strong. Which really can reflect the Tiananmen Square protests every year no one have never given up forgetting the incident everyone of Hong Kong thinks we can one day achieve what they wanted.

“原諒我這一生不羈放縱愛自由-Forgive me this life of uninhibited love and indulgence of freedom” The most popular sentence of all everyone wants freedom no one like being trapped that is why we are always fighting for election. “那會怕有一天只你共我-I’m not afraid if someday there’s only you and me” Harmony is the voice of all but not one.

This song will never get old the melody and the lyrics just fits perfect in Hong Kong society it really gathers everyone to be one. Memories never takes us to the past but it brings it to the present. This song will be kept on playing relating to the present or future world. One interesting experience that I came across that made me have the rationale for this analyze is when I was in a minibus and the radio suddenly plays this song I could hear everyone humming to the song. This really show this is no ordinary memory but a collective memory that stayed in Hong Kong forever.
