Film Review- Lan Kwai Fong


The movie named Lan Kwai Fong directed by Wilson Chin Kwok-Wai hit the big screen in 2011. It is ranked for IIB, which is not suitable for underage and encourage parental guidance while watching.

The movie explores the luxurious and lavish lifestyle of a group of wealthy youth. Steven and Jennifer are the leading characters of the entire movie. They dress up and enjoy clubbing in Lan Kwai Fong every night after work. Clubbing becomes their daily routine. They search for fun, casual sex and even true love at night.

The love story between Steven and Jennifer is set in Lan Kwai Fong. The place is an icon of luxurious pleasure-seeking lifestyle in Hong Kong. The area is constituted to cater young adults’ taste with various restaurants, bars and clubs. The images that visitors hold of Lan Kwai Fong are likely to benightclubs, electronic music, alcohols, wild drunkards and casual sex. The movie successfully presented the actual milieu of Lan Kwai Fong. The director uses familiar settings, like clubs, streets and transportation to communicate with local audience.

The movie reflects the culture of some local young adults’ partying and sexual nightlife in different ways. The content of the movie is realistic in a certain extent. With rising living standards, today’s youngsters can enjoy all kinds of material comforts. In the movie, leading characters like to spend money on clubbing, alcohols and designer goods. They do not care about how they use the money, as long as they can have fun and show off in front of other clubbers. The movie characters share similar culture and consumption pattern with local young people. Moreover, the movie narratives also reflect Hong Kong's youngsters' social and relationship value. Causal sex, one night stand and cheating are common story plots of the movie. The hero and heroine of the movie usually do not maintain long and responsible relationship with their lovers. The movie characters' description and the local young adults' behaviors are resemble.

After the success of his first movie, the director Wilson Chin Kwok-Wai released a series of movies named Lan Kwai Fong 2 and Lan Kwai Fong 3 in 2012 and 2014 respectively. All of them are the high-grossing movies in Hong Kong. They all belonged to the same movie genre that include romantic and sexual content. The unique and audacious story plots draw audience attention and gain much popularity among them. The content of those movies promote clubbing culture, lavish lifestyle and causal relationship. 

In addition, those films also influence the local movie market a lot.The casts of the movies include many latest pseudo-models, like Jeana Ho and Dada Chan. Most of them are young models and do not receive professional training. They tend to wear provocative clothes to show their cleavages and sexy body figures. The use of pseudo-models is becoming more prevalent in the media industry since they have accrued a large young fan-base. Besides, more and more local-produced movies are being commercialized in order to suit the taste of local audience.
