Love in a puff is a film produced in 2010 by Director Pang Ho Cheung. It is a love comedy. The storyline of the film is around the love of the office workers Jimmy (acted by Shawn Yue) and the sales Cherie (acted by Miriam Yeung). They first meet each other in the lane when they are smoking. Jimmy helps Cherie to light up the cigarettes and starts to chat with each other. Their love grows afterwards.
The inspiration of filming this movie is due to the banning of smoking in all indoor area in 2007. This leads to the smokers, especially the office workers, need to go to the lane between buildings to smoke. They would gather in that short period of time and share the interesting incidents happen on that day.
As Love in a puff has too much foul language and smoking scenes, it has been set as categorized III. Its box office is not ideal at first, however after the promotion of bloggers through Weibo and the reputation of viewers, the box office has increased rapidly.
In Love in the puff, Director Pang Ho Cheung has stereotype the love pattern in present society. He has used the love relationship of Jimmy and Cherie to reflect today’s young male and female love.
In this film, the director set Jimmy to represent the young male and Cherie to represent the female. Jimmy is someone who is young, charming, office workers and he is still finding his love. Cherie is a woman that has stable relationship with her boyfriend, “middle-age woman” and a sales in this society.
Throughout the movie, they know each other less than half month. Their love relationship has reversed the traditional. They do not need to know each other well. They date each other only due to their feeling. Although Cherie has a stable boyfriend, she still tries to start another relationship with Jimmy. In the fifth day after they meet each other, they decide to go to the motel to have sex.
However, this kind of relationship cannot be long lasting. There must be some buffer in the process after the passion. When Cherie would like to confirm their love relationship by changing the plan of her phone, Jimmy starts to hesitate. He would not like to give up his single life by the control of a woman. Fortunately, Jimmy has determined he loves Cherie and has a happy ending.
This kind of love seems to be outstanding in the movie because Jimmy and Cherie have compressed many stages of knowing each other, but Director Pang actually reflects the reality to the public. There are lots of relationship grows like Jimmy and Cherie in this society now.
Love originally should be something that need to discuss seriously, but Director Pang Ho Cheung tries to use a more relax and funny filming technique to bring out the love relationships in the present society.
