Derivative song of a local culture and identity: “MK妹你好嗎?”

Introduction
“MK妹你好嗎?” is produced in 2013 by a group of Internet users, who are members of the Hong Kong Golden Forum. The song is based on the melody of Eason Chan’s song “富士山下”. The lyrics have been re-created by the forum users, basing on a different topic. The derivative song “MK妹你好嗎?” is produced to describe a local culture called “MK culture”, and to introduce the people who consume it.
“MK” refers to Mong Kok. “MK” is a term to identify girls who always go to Mong Kok and consume MK culture. It can be said as a cultural identity. Those girls share some characteristics in behaviors and personality. The song  “MK妹你好嗎?” focuses on those girls’ characteristics, and show what the forum members think about those girls.

Analysis of lyrics
The lyrics have indicated some characteristics of “MK”. For example, they have no money so they can only buy cheap cigarettes. They always speak foul languages which make the other have negative images on them. The make-up of “MK” is also not appreciated.

如今幾千個MK已把這大城逐吋醜化
每天也於Facebook中發起對罵
閑時自拍食大麻 然後又up上論壇
誰人能阻止這價值觀扭化
In these lyrics, the negative image of “MK” is being explained through their behaviors. Some “MK ” like to blame the others on Facebook. Some of them even post a photo onto an online forum when they were taking Marijuana. Their behaviors are thought to violate the core value.

The lyrics writers have further explained the normal daily life of “MK” and criticized their behavior at the same time. They said “MK” have damaged the social image of Hong Kong. Moreover, “MK” have created a special language and used it in text messages. Since the language is difficult to let people who are not exposed to MK culture get the actual meaning, the language is being considered as a kind of foul language. Last but not least, the writers have mentioned the female members of the Golden Forum (“絲打”) is elegant when comparing to “MK ”.

Conclusion
All in all, the derivative song has implied several concerns.

Firstly, it gives a stereotype in identifying girls consuming MK culture. It has mentioned the behaviors and the outlook of “MK” do not fit in the social norm in Hong Kong. It has emphasized the differences between “MK”and normal people like the Golden Forum members. Using Sacks’s Membership Categorization Analysis (1992) to analyze the phenomenon, the song has clearly divided the social categories of “MK ” and Golden Forum members. Golden Forum members produced the derivative work and made them feel ‘go together’ in criticizing “MK”.

Secondly, the song has included a gender issue. The lyrics writers use girls who consume MK culture to be the main character rather than boys. Perhaps the reason of using girls is that girls usually are being expected to be cultivated. “MK ” is a group of girls who do not fit into the norm. They compare “MK” with “絲打”, which may imply they are standing in a higher position in judging two groups of female’s behaviors.

After looking into the MK culture and the “MK ” identity which mentioned by the song, people can easily imagine the picture and have a negative impression of them. Derivative works always reflect social issue and political issue. In the song “MK妹你好嗎?”, perhaps its aims is reflecting youth problems through the MK culture.
