Online Film Review:The way we Dance(狂舞派)

The way we Dance(狂舞派) is filmed by Adam Wong Sau Ping. It shows on August 2013, and became a hot issue at that time. Just like what we seen in the trailer, it is a dance film which telling us the path of seeking dreams .Although the same categories of this movie is very common in Hollywood genres, it breaks the genres limitation of Hong Kong popular film.Until Septemberit's ticketing income is over twelve million and won a lot praises from publicit might seeing as the recovery of Hong Kong local film industries. Before this movie, Hong Kongers will link with Grease or Step up easily when they discuss about dance movie.

Full of youngers, the brave and passions of seeking hopes (dreams)… these are the elements that we can find in almost of the dance movie. The focus point of the way we dance is not in surprised plots but the Way of narrative, the ability to tell the story’s detail. All of the actors are the professional in different dancing domains. Although the story axes mainly focus on Fleur(leading role), the main characters are not Fleur only; all the dancers have their own story. To some HongKongers, they are decoding a different political meaning instead of a simple Youth dancing movie.

So how far are you willing to go for dance?(為了夢想,你可以去到幾盡?) This is the most impressive propaganda slogan in the movie trailer, and become the main theme which gave the audience a sense of sympathy, and a deep reflection. This is also the reason why I choose The way we Dance as an analysis texts, because it brings a positive power while our society was facing a series of negative news.

Self identity of HongKongers Tai Chi Hip Hop

Fleur is a girl who has passionate in Hip-hop, however because of the traditional ideology from her family, she choose study rather than the opportunity to become a dancer as her future occupation. Fleur finally free to choose what she wants and decided to continuous her ‘life’ in university. Fleur hates the traditions, no matter her old family business(soy bean products) or Taichi, which become the conflict between tradition (Chinese)and innovation(Western). We can not said Fleur is represent to Hong Kong, but this is similar to nowadays Hong Kong situation. Of.Of course, Fleur and Alan(leading role who invite Fleur to join Tai chi society) have told us the answer that we don’t need to choose any one side by adding Tai Chi into hip –hop dance performance. That’s the charming point of Hong Kong, a city accommodate Chinese and western culture.

Collective memories

director uses a lot of Hong Kong special symbols ,such as the street border with weedssoy bean product shop, factory, under the banyan in the park etc. Audience feel familiar and shorten the distance between actor and audiences , because these are the things we usually see it . it highlight the Sense of local products and makes different to the western dance movie which mostly sells “stylish”.

Through the story, we know that seeking dreams are not as simple as animation.we need to pay for it, also we can not seeking dreams without considering results, but  insisting on it.

So how far are you willing to go for xxx?(為了xxx,你可以去到幾盡?)

Remember why we still alive? Why we are studying in UWA program? Why we need to find jobs and earn money? Fail? It isn't a problem. However, we need to fight for our “xxx”, Of course, including our freedom of speak etc.
