Film review - Lan Kwai Fong

Lan Kwai Fong is a film that using the “Lan Kwai Fong”as the theme. Lan Kwai Fong is a very famous location in Hong Kong. There are so many famous bars and nightclubs. Every night, everyday, there are so many parties and so many alcohols all around the Lan Kwai Fong. There will not have a silent night. Different men and women from different countries will go there and do whatever they want. Some of them will go for drinking with friends. Some of them will go Lan Kwai Fong and try to find “someone”. The people who go to Lan Kwai Fong will have different purposes. Lan Kwai Fong is a place for recording the people’s joys and sorrows. Also, it is a good place for you to explore and meet different kinds of people here. The clubs are so complicated. The environments are very dark and contain very loudly music. The people are mostly coming for some purposes. It is totally outside and different from the real world.

In this film, we can recognize the blooming and depraved Hong Kong nightlife in Lan Kwai Fong. It is one of the most successful points for this film. The scenes in “LAN KWAI FONG” are really authentic. It totally shows the audient what happen in Lan Kwai Fong every night. If you really like to go night club, you must find your shadow in the film.

On the other hand, the story is talking about a group of boys and girls. They are always going to Lan Kwai Fong’s club to have fun and also they want to find a partner. Some of them want to find a sex partner and look for a “one night stand”. Some of them want to have fun only. Some of them want to look for a “real love” relationship in club. The way of the film narrative is that they try to make 4 main story lines for the whole film. Some of the story lines are talking about the real love relationship in the club. Some of the story lines are talking about how a good girl turns to be a devil of sex. The film represents different kind of relationship very nicely.

Moreover, another theme of “LAN KWAI FONG” is sex. In the film, the girls are willing to have a “one night stand” with a stranger very easily. It brings out a very interesting question. Does this dissolute and promiscuous behavior really happen in the reality? Two people can build up a sex relationship within few hours. The film wants to tell you that it is not a fictitious idea, but also it is a fact in the reality. Every day and every time in the LAN KWAI FONG”.

Furthermore, the dialogues of the girls in the film are very vivid with the real world. For example, one of the boy and girl are going to have sex in the washing room, the girl asks the boy where the condom is. When the boy tells her that he does not have one, the girl becomes very angry and stops to have sex with him. After that, they argue and leave each other because of this. Another example is that the boy plays the game with the girls. The boy tells the girl if they lose the game, they will need to be his wife forever. After that, the girl replies him very quickly. “Do you say the same thing with other girls every night?” The last one is that when the boy and girl are trying to find a place to have sex. The girl is asking the boy that “you place or my place”. Those screens are very real and true. It let the people know how the love relationship works and also the sexual attitudes in the youngster’s world.

Lastly, I do not think it is a really good movie even the theme is attractive. The film makes audient to have a misunderstanding on sex. It feels they want to tell the audients that people can be promiscuity. To have a “one night stand” is a very normal and it is acceptable nowadays. We also can able to find a real love relationship from one night stand. It completely contorts the correct sexual attitudes and the healthy love relationship. Film is a popular entertainment. It is even much better than the liberal studies at school. However, the film contorts the correct sexual attitudes and the healthy love relationship. It will create a very bad ideology for the audient. It will make an unhealthy phenomenon for the society. Why does the film not try to focus more on the real love relationship rather than the sex relationship and bring out the issue of Sexual Promiscuity in nowadays? Why does the film not try to tell the audient that the irresponsible sex relation will become a strong mistrust between the boys and girls? These things are also the dark side of our society. I think the film maker should think about it. Try to make use of the film to send out more positive messages and thoughts to the audients in order to make the society become better.

  1. The review nicely captures some of the Hong Kong's nightclubbing scenes and relationships of dedicated party-goers depicted in the film. It’s a good strategy to cite some specific scenes to illustrate your points, and the selected quotes of dialogues are quite representative.

I agree with your point that the film provides a general impression of Hong Kong youth's easy attitude on sex and love. It’s also true that media should bear social responsibility while providing entertainment. However, it seems that the film possesses some "romantic" implications despite the fact that it is a sexually charged: can we eliminate the possibilities of finding true love and companionship from such kind of “fairytale clubland”? According to the director, some relationships may be motivated by sex in the beginning but ended up in real authentic love too!
