3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy movie review

3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy has launched in the year of 2011, it claimed that this is the first 3D erotic movie in the world and it has been released in different countries, for example Hong Kong, South Korea, Australia.
However, even the box office is very good , the comments from the audiences are negative, as people complained that the sex scene are too little and action scene are too much.

Nevertheless, this is still a new try or a refreshment in the Hong Kong erotic movie industry and the details or flow of the story have some similarities with another famous erotic movie in 70s called “Intimate Confessions of a Chinese Courtesan”(愛奴), especially the SM performance and those violence fighting sense .

The story is based on a very popular Chinese classical novel called “The Carnal Prayer Mat” (肉蒲團) and this is written by Li Yu in Qing Dynasty. In the movie, Hayama Go as the main character Wei Yangsang(未央生)who was a very talented scholar and he thought that “life is short” , so as a man should enjoy the joy of sex with every single woman in every single minute. After that , Wei Yangsheng had married with a beautiful lady called Yuxiang (鐵玉香), who was a pure virgin and came from a rich family. However, as Wei Yangsheng’s sexual skill was too weak and he could not fulfill Yuxiangs’ needs in the daily life. So there were some hidden problems started to occur.
One day , Wei Yangsheng’s friend had brought him to visit a royal family member Prince Ning, who was a very rich and powerful member in the family. Price Ning had built a mansion called “Extreme Ecstasy”(極樂閣) .In that mansion, there were lots of sex slaves to serve Prince Ning and he will invite some talented sex players to be one of the members.

The purpose for Wei Yangsang to enter the Mansion was to find out some illegal evidences from Prince Ning. However, because Wei Yangsang was not a skillful player and the main point was his penis was too short, which he could not perform well in the sexual activities. So, Price Ning though that Wei Yangsang was not able to become the member in the mansion. Because of that Wei Yangsang had done some operations to change his penis into a bigger one, then he had become more skillful player when he had sex with the girls in that mansion.
On the other hand, as he was too addicted to it, finally Yuxiang had come to divorce with him. At the same time, Price Ning had found out Wei Yangsang’s purpose and he started to take revenge on this little young couple.

In this movie, undoubtedly that stereotyping has occurred. For example, Yuxiang has been portrayed as a traditional Chinese woman at first, who was pure and passive. However, as Wei Yangsang had other affairs, she started to change into a whore and had different relationship with other men. This is a bit ridiculous as why a woman should use sex to take revenge on her ex- lover, in order to prove that she is having a better life than him? Therefore this is a kind of stereotyping as once a woman got failure in her love; she will turn into an immoral diva.

Also, there are some gender inequality can be seen from the interaction between the female character and Wei Yangsang. The sex positions that they have designed are showing that men are still in the leading position, for example the SM performance between Price Ning and those sex slaves. Stereotyping has been an issue in this movie as female are mostly without power and become whores in the end, no matter how pure they are in the beginning.

  1. Your work has marked a deep reflection on the media’s role in constructing gender stereotypes. In fact the genre of erotic film seems to provide justifications for gender inequalities/rigid gender roles, as they are produced intentionally for provoking sexual desires and visual pleasure of male audiences in most cases.

Perhaps you can be more concise in summarizing the plot and spend more words on the part of analysis. On the other hand, the character of Vonnie Lui, an old man in a beautiful woman’s body, actually embodies a fusion of masculinity and femininity. You may wish to explore the implication of the confusion regarding gender roles and sexuality encountered by her/him.
