Nothing Lasts Forever: Juno's Style Music

Few days ago, Juno Mak has launched his second great hits album – “Nothing Lasts Forever”. In the album, it consists of 14 pervious pieces with three new songs. Those new songs are “超生培慾”, “紙箱國” and “上春風的課”. Base on the interview in Ming Post, Juno said that these three new songs are talking different scenario of love. “超生培慾” is a song about the crazy act of a fetishist. A guy loves the feeling of his mother’s hand touching his face in his childhood. After his mother died, he is going to kidnap women back home and make them look like his mother. Then, he cut their hand off and collects in the gallery. “紙箱國” is a love story of a vagrant. Juno stated that he interests in vagrants living style and think them still have right to love. “上春風的課” is another love story between teacher and student.

Juno is not a famous and popular main stream singer in Hong Kong. But his music is conform Adorno’s notion of standardization and pseudo-individualisation. Observing the melody of these songs, we can find that the songs’ structure is very similar to other local singers’ songs. Most of them are written by several famous songwriters and lyricists. Making songs are easier for audiences to accept.

However, Juno tries to make his music more outstanding from those main stream productions. He put afford on the message delivery of the songs. Usually, he applies the ideologies in each song. “吃鯨魚的人” is a song with the ideology of environment and animal protection. Besides, having artistic album cover is also a symbolic Juno’s style which easy to differentiate from others. From these unique features, it is match with what Adorno’s notion of pseudo-individualisation.

Many people on the internet have criticized that Juno’s music is piled up by his father money. Someone even evaluate his vocal can’t get to the high key and the lyrics of his songs are meaningless and abstract. However, I have an alternative view on his music. I agree that his vocal is really weak when he sings at higher key. But I think he has a strong sense of creative and searching high quality of music composition. In his recent works, he is going to combine the Pop-rock with the Orchestra elements. It creates different complex layers on melody structure. For the abstract theme of the song, it seems that different audiences may have different interpretation on same song. It is difficult for artists to control audiences’ thought.

Lastly, after listening to the album, my opinion is Juno really easy to lose his voice when he is singing at the high key section of his song. However, the composition of each song is really high quality, especially the Orchestra component at the background of the melody.

  1. Benson, the song and the MV of "超生培慾" made me think if a term called "Gentle and violent" (溫柔與暴烈)... Well, I think this extreme sentiment is from the ultimate love.

I love this song and the MV. They also let me think of Juno's recent advertisment of Bauhaus. The bloody and fetish image is marvelous! Do you think it's kind of Aesthetics?
    Anyway, thanks for sharing!

  2. Finally got a review on music album! Know what? One of Juno’s old songs, 耿耿於懷had once been my favorite song (very long time ago, kaka). However, this song is quite different from those you introduced to us this time, as it as very “popular” style (what we call “karaoke song”) and talks about a typical love scenario (but yet very appealing to me, as I am not that into the “alternative music”, I admit).

Regarding his new album, you described it as conforming to Adorno’s notion of standardization and pseudo-individualisation. In addition to the structure of the melody, how about the lyrics and packaging method? You have mentioned about the “artistic cover” of the album, I would like to know how “artistic” it is (for example, referring to his dressing style, posture, or the layout of the cover). What is its major difference from the so called “mainstream” music album cover?

Another point drawing my attention is what you described as “abstract theme of the song “. It would be great if you could cite some examples to illustrate the polysemic nature of the text. What are the possible readings offered for audiences? In particular, what kinds of feelings or message can you derive from his songs? Nevertheless, you review is very critical and has attracted me to listen Juno’s songs again. Thanks for your recommendation!

  4. Re Avin: I agree that Juno's songs at his early age are quite "popular" love songs. (Because most of them are 伍樂城+黃偉文) But in recent year, he hires more 唱作人 to write for him like 馮穎琪, 周國賢, 倫永亮). It brings many fresh elements and makes it different with other local singers (recommend 借火, Never Said Goodbye, 從此世界多了一分鐘). For the artistic cover, because Juno always presents his fashionable style, this time he use his body shape with 3D effect to create an unique cover. In my opinion, I think he is imitating Justin Timberlake.

    Re Florence:
Thanks you for your comment. I think his recent MVs are quite aesthetics and he loves art

Apparently, Juno's early songs were commercial-driven. Now most of his works can depict his style and characteristic, that is quite rare in HK's music industry. I like his last-last album, "Chapel Of Dawn", very exotic and evil. I felt surprised that music could be made the style like this! Hope he can insist his style!

  6. Hi Avin,
Yes, I also know that term is from 黃碧雲, however, i haven't read her novels. I know this term from some writers who mentioned 黃碧雲's writing. ( But I forgot which writer, haha), and I love this term!!
